Business Central’s native reporting capabilities can cause all types of headaches— from the long wait times to the limitation of basic reports that don’t show you what you really want to know.

The new Dynamics Query Builder is designed to let you build queries and run your reports in Business Central significantly faster than you typically can in the base version, all without leaving the application. You can mix and match data, tables, and other information to create a fully customized report tailored exactly to your needs. To take it a step even further, you can pair this extension with any AI of your choice to create custom queries even faster.

Whether you need finances, inventory, or another type of customized report, a greater understanding of how Dynamic Query Builder can utilize AI to get you what you need with just a few clicks will certainly make your reporting processes much easier. So without further ado, let’s begin!

Building a report using the Dynamics Query Builder and your AI

First, let’s jump into the Dynamic Query Builder and export the query you will use to build a custom report. This query will serve as the base template for your AI to build on before creating your newly customized report.

Select and export a query

In your Business Central environment, search for and open the Dynamic Query Builder, and select the query you would like to export. Once opened, on the top ribbon bar, you can use the “Function” button to select “Export Query” to download your query as a .json file, which you can then upload to your AI and use to create a specific report.

Upload your query to AI

In a new AI chat, upload your query file and write a prompt asking it to build your desired query. The more specific you are, the better the AI will create what you are looking for. In the demo, our first prompt reads: “This is a file from a Business Central ISV called Dynamic Query Builder. Please read and create a file for an Order Backlog by Salesperson.”

Your AI will most likely ask you to confirm questions it has or items to be included before completing its build. This is a chance for you to review, add to, or remove items you want from your query, like specific data or columns to include before the AI completes its task. Once you have made all the necessary adjustments to the prompt, you can ask your AI to complete its build and download the .json file it generates.

Import the AI query to your builder

Now, back in your Business Central Dynamic Query Builder page, use the “Functions” button again to import your query, dragging and dropping your .json file from your AI. Then, in a flash, your newly built query will appear on your screen for you to run and test as you typically would.

Voila, a custom-built query and report for you to run using quick and simple steps. No long loading times, no complex code.
